After the recent period of sickness I’ve started to feel a whole lot better. With some healthy eating this week I’ve been able to complete the first week of the FTP builder program on Zwift and feel great.
I started at the very beginning of the program, so the duration will be 12 weeks. I figured that instead of skipping the first 2 weeks (as you can if you are in shape) I’d go from the start. My thinking being that I had been unwell going into it so an easier start would be good.
Eating right
I’ve also started trying to get a better understanding of how the food I eat (or don’t) effects my recovery. I’m a pescatarian so I don’t eat meat but I do eat some fish. I’ve been trying to be more conscious of how much protein and how many minerals I’m missing. My average daily food intake doesn’t seem like it’s getting me to my required protein level. This week my meals have had extra protein sources added. Things like beans and tofu. The added bonus being that an increase in fibre is good for weight control too. Obviously there may have been the occasional day where the plan went slightly off.
I’m not sure if the diet changes will help with the weird leg feelings I’ve had. There’s been a number of rides over the past couple of years which have resulted in me feeling weak in the legs. Not tired as much as missing power. I think it has something to do with how I’m eating, but when I’ve seen the doctor they’ve told me there’s nothing off on my nutrient levels.
Let’s see how recovery from the training goes and if there’s any noticeable improvements. During week 2 I think I’ll use the Alpe du Zwift route for one of my training rides and see how things go.
